Paramount Global Ends DEI Policies: What It Means for Business

1 min read

Paramount Global has announced the termination of multiple diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies, aligning with a recent executive order from President Donald Trump. The White House directive prohibits DEI-related practices in federal agencies and calls for investigations into private firms enforcing such initiatives.

Changes to Paramount’s DEI Policies

In an internal memo distributed to employees, Paramount confirmed the discontinuation of specific DEI-related efforts, including the use of numerical diversity goals in hiring. The company also stated it will no longer collect demographic data from U.S. job applicants, except in jurisdictions where such data collection is legally required.

The co-CEOs—George Cheeks, Chris McCarthy, and Brian Robbins—referenced the Supreme Court and federal mandates as key factors in these decisions. “Our focus remains on fostering a talented workforce that reflects diverse perspectives, while ensuring compliance with legal requirements,” the memo stated.

Paramount’s Previous DEI Commitments

Over the years, the company has engaged in multiple DEI initiatives, such as allocating millions toward racial justice causes in 2020 and launching programs like Content for Change, which aimed to reshape media portrayals of race and mental health. Paramount has also maintained an annual Inclusion Week and an Office of Global Inclusion.

Industry-Wide DEI Reversals

Paramount is not alone in altering its DEI strategy. Retail giants such as Walmart, Target, and Amazon have similarly downscaled their DEI goals in recent months. Meanwhile, companies like Apple and Costco continue to uphold their DEI commitments despite growing scrutiny under the current administration.

The media sector, in particular, has faced pressures from the government. Comcast is currently under federal investigation for its DEI policies. Similarly, public broadcaster PBS, responding to the executive order, announced the closure of its DEI office.

Broader Implications for Media and Business

Other media conglomerates are also adjusting their policies. Earlier this month, Disney revised its DEI efforts by modifying internal performance criteria and rebranding support programs. Given the political climate, corporate strategies surrounding workplace diversity and inclusion are expected to remain a focal point for both regulators and industry leaders in the months ahead.

With federal agencies tasked with monitoring “discriminatory DEI practices,” businesses in various sectors must navigate an evolving regulatory environment. The potential legal and reputational consequences could lead more corporations to reassess their DEI strategies moving forward.
