Amazon's One Medical CEO stepping down after less than two years at helm

One Medical’s CEO, Trent Green, is set to depart from the Amazon-owned primary care provider after less than two years in his position. Green’s exit comes as he prepares to become the CEO of NRC Health, an organization known for providing healthcare analytics and support services, effective June 1.

Under Green’s leadership, One Medical expanded significantly by entering new markets and launching additional office locations. Furthermore, the company integrated its healthcare offerings into Amazon’s ecosystem by including medical services as part of its Prime membership program.

Amazon confirmed Green’s resignation through an official statement. “After nearly three years at Amazon One Medical, CEO Trent Green has opted to step away from the company,” noted an Amazon spokesperson. “We extend our gratitude to Trent for his numerous contributions and wish him success in his future endeavors.”

Neil Lindsay, who oversees Amazon Health Services, shared with employees that Green is relocating to Nebraska for his new role. Green’s final day with Amazon is set for April 4.

Transition and Impact

Trent Green took the helm of One Medical in September 2023, succeeding Amir Dan Rubin. This change occurred approximately six months following Amazon’s completion of its $3.9 billion acquisition of One Medical, marking it as one of the largest acquisitions in Amazon’s history, second only to its $13.7 billion purchase of Whole Foods in 2017.

Amazon’s acquisition of One Medical signifies the company’s commitment to strengthening its presence in the healthcare sector. Prior to this, Amazon acquired the online pharmacy PillPack in 2018, which cost about $750 million, as part of a broader strategy to enhance its healthcare services.

In addition to these ventures, Amazon has continuously adapted its healthcare strategy, including the launch and subsequent shutdown of its telehealth service, along with various health and wellness products.

Future Directions

As One Medical moves forward without Green, observers within the industry will be keenly watching how the company navigates the competitive landscape of healthcare services and integrates further into Amazon’s expansive ecosystem. The leadership transition could also impact Amazon’s strategic initiatives in health and wellness, reflecting the ongoing evolution of healthcare delivery in the digital age.
